A thoughtful article about free-diving short sumps in the Dales (including the sumps in Rowten Pot).

Had an excellent trip from Rowten Pot to Valley Entrance (and back again) in early September. I needed to check rope lengths (for the Northern Caves update), so I rigged Rowten for a return trip rather than doing the pull-through. The first sump is about 8m, but didn't seem that long. I put a large flat rock inside my wetsuit for extra weight and dived the sump facing the roof. This made diving easier. The next sump is much shorter and surfaces in another large cross-rift. The last sump was an easy duck with around 3.5 inches of airspace. All the sumps were clear from obstructions with secure diving lines. The sumps are quite straightforward and add a bit of spice to a Rowten trip!
