QUAKING POT

Long sections of strenuous, narrow passage will push some cavers close to their physical and psychological limits.

Simon and I completed a 9 hour return trip to Gormenghast recently. We couldn't find any useful spits on the Second Pitch (lower pitch head), but the chockstone is good and there is a stud in the left wall with a washer and nut. It needs a wire or 5 mm rope or a large-hole hanger as I don't think a standard one will fit. There are abandoned ropes on all pitches after The Crux, but we fixed our own because the in situ ropes look lethal and this is the last place you want to have an accident. Quaking Pot needs some 'keenies' to do a cave clear up.

A group of cavers from RRCPC, CPC, ULSA and WRPC have recently completed a long overdue clean-up of Quaking Pot. All the abandoned digging equipment (near Gormenghast) has been removed together with a large number of abandoned pitch ropes and handlines. There are no in situ pitch ropes or handlines left in the cave and future visitors should install (and remove) their own ropes en-route.

Firstly I want to say how useful the book was on our recent trip to Gormenghast at the bottom of Quaking Pot. We took a laminated description with us and it was very useful for knowing when to remove SRT between pitches and which pitches are often hand-lined as none of the 3 of us had ever been before. Quick note on the rigging - there are two hangers in-situ at the top of the 4th pitch. I guess to stop cavers missing the pitch and crawling on into the bypass. These two hangers are in good condition and form a good Y-hang down the pitch.

Just completed a 10 hour return trip to Gormenghast. I can confirm that there are two 10mm stainless studs on each side of the Second Pitch, one has a nut and washer, the other doesn't. Also, the Fourth Pitch has two newish looking plate hangers in situ at the pitch head. The wet entrance also looks to have been blocked by a very recent rockfall from above. Didn't look too closely, but it didn't look like it would require much effort to get in that way. Otherwise - a fantastic trip with a perfect description in the guide.
