JEAN POT

A short trip down a modest pothole, but the vertical situations are engaging and some fine straws decorate the lower passages.

One small word of warning for Jean Pot. The cave is a fairly safe bet when everywhere else is wet, but last week we went down in a blizzard. Water levels were fine on the way in, but the snowmelt created a bit of a hazard on the way out with up to four times the water volume. This was particularly noticeable coming up the 4th pitch which is a bit narrow at the top. I just thought I would mention it in case anyone else assumed it is totally without risk.

Coming out of Jean Pot recently we free-climbed several pitches - the Fifth, Third and Entrance. We found the Fifth Pitch to be the trickiest since it is so muddy and a handline is to be advised if one does not wish to take a slide down the Sixth Pitch as well. The Third Pitch is on good clean rock and there are nice flaky holds, so one feels secure on this climb. Coming out of the entrance, we took a kind of spiral route, bridging up on the nice rough rock and there are plenty of knobbly holds as well, making a pleasant finish to the trip. We wondered if a fixed line on the traverse above the Blind Pit would be a good idea, since it would minimise the risk of damage to the straws to have the rope there rather than faff about placing hangers.

Some old abandoned pitch tackle and other rubbish has recently been removed from Jean Pot and a new fixed rope has been installed on the Traverse above the Blind Pit.
